11 Second Club - December

So here's my submission for the 11 Second Club monthly competition. Due to limited access to the Maya suite i only had 2 days to complete this animation entirely. But i had fun.

Artist Study

I've been working on this painting in ArtRage Studio, studying the work of an artist called Erik D Martin. I really like the crude way he uses colour to form shapes.

I'm not satisfied that i quite captured the complexity of the texturing, but there's room to learn...

Original painting and more work by Erik D Martin can be found on his blog:

Palm Island

To distract myself from real work, i modelled a small island for a friends film concept, it had to be a small round island with a palm on it!

Bambi Study

I've been conducting some artist studies in hope to improve my landscape and environment observations. I spent a while slaving at a digital painting in Artrage from a layout in Bambi.

Traditional approach to digital painting. (Cheated on the bark by layering a texture from google, no time for painting bark).

I've been working on a new sketchbook in which has commonly been known as 'The Handy Book'.

A couple of quick pieces from my time spent in rural France recently...

Pen on paper.

Acrylics on paper.

Malawi Cichlids

I've been conducting a few observations of my fish. This is the governor of my fish tank. My mum insists he should be more aggressive looking, but i believe him to be gentle at heart.

Green Man Concept

Now I have a little time for fun, since handing in my work, I decided to have a quick bash at a concept.

Cutout Style Layout Painting

I've block filled my layout with colour to give an impression of a final colour scheme for my layout. This 'cut-out' type effect is really interesting, although I'd like to incorporate some traditional methods before I am satisfied with the overall result.

DIY line tester and lightbox

I must say that I am quite proud of this. A reasonable A3 lightbox purchased from Amazon, with a cheap webcam with LEDs also from Amazon, costing me roughly £55 in total. I created a small pocked out of cardboard and taped it to the front of the lightbox, this allows my metal ruler to slip into the pocket when line testing, the webcam can then be clamped to the top of the ruler.

This means the line tester can be removed whilst animating.

Very efficient.

Character Design: Tree Frog

Despite my complete inability to improvise characters, I persist in trying.
